How many people here have had these go bad on them? I just had my
forth one installed. The first one was replaced as a recall item,
IIRC. The second one was a dude out of the box, it was replaced before
I even got my car back from that service call. Oh, I've got an '03 's'
model.

I'm actually out of warrantee, but the dealer good-willed the new
module.

I am on my third module - Mazda6, V6,, 2003, @41,000 miles, car is just
beyond 4 years old. All have been replaced under warranty but the next one
will be on my dime.

I've had the original and two replacements for this module so far on my 2003
Mazda 6S. Mileage on this six year old car is still under 50k.
All were done under warranty but if there is yet another failure, I will
need to pay for it.

Overall, I've really liked this car, new model issues and all. All the
little recalls except the initial one for a software update to stop the
Check Engine light from coming on (which is did at about 1600 miles) didn't
affect my vehicle directly (problem didn't actually manifest itself)
although I had the recalls taken care of. Was the fan control module really
a recall? - I don't remember that - it's been the only issue I consider
worrisome as it kept recurring.

I've got over 85k on mine.

Same here. But for the past couple of years, I've been wanting to
replace it, for a variety of reasons: I want something a bit smaller,
something with better fuel economy, and, since I have moved further
into the snow-belt, something with AWD. Maybe a Subaru Impreza.
Problem is, I can't afford payments on a car now.

Yes, it was a recall item. IIRC, the problem was that the control
module would fail, often leaving the fan ON when the engine was off
thus draining the battery.

Yes, the misbehaving fan belt module did just that: after I had turned the
engine off, the fan would whirl away at high speed for several more minutes
before going off completely.

I didn't realize this was draining my battery unnecessarily. Makes me
appreciate that I would take the car back to the dealer quite quickly after
the problem manifested itself.

I actually want to keep this car quite a bit longer, especially since gas
prices here in California are back to @$2.00 a gallon. My next car will be
a hybrid in all likelihood.

Also, I cannot afford car payments right now in any case.

That is perfectly normal behavior. The problem was that sometimes it
would fail to turn off.
