I read somewhere that the V6 was designed SOLELY for an automatic
transmission and that, since Mazda sold relatively few V6/5-speed
manual first-gen Mazda 6s, that it wasn't worth the expense to design
a new block for the new 6. That's the same reasoning behind the
elimination of the wagon and hatchback models.
